As remote and sparsely populated as Serra County is, we are lucky enough to have an strong volunteer base. Volunteer fire departments are located in Alleghany, Pike, Downieville, Sierra City, Sattley, Sierra Brooks, Calpine, Sieraville, & Loyalton. At the sound of the siren, fire personnel including EMTs and First Responders arrive, almost out of nowhere to take care of most any situation. So while vacationing or visiting the area, play safe, but if faced with an emergency, rest assured, help is right around the bend.
Personal preparedness goes a long way in avoiding meeting our trusty search and rescue volunteers. Always let somebody know where you are going and when you expect to return. Do not count on having cell phone service! Make sure to remember basic first aid supplies, any medications needed, flashlight, jacket, bug spray, sunscreen, and most importantly water. GPS is not always accurate in the canyons so make sure to have a hard copy map and compass as well.
